Here are thousands of public domain movies, promotional films and commercials you can use in your internet videos
The video below is from a giant collection of public domain films consisting of corporate advertising, promotional and educational films, TV commercials, newsreels, home movies, and more. It's a great source of vintage footage you can use to add a fun twist to your own videos - for free... That promotional clip is called the Wonderful New World of Fords, and it's a part of the Prelinger Archives collection, at the Internet Archive. Here's some background information on the Prelinger Archives, from Wikipedia... The Prelinger Archives is a collection of films, mostly shorts made for industrial or educational markets. The Archives was founded by Rick Prelinger in 1982 in order to preserve what he calls "ephemeral" films: corporate advertising and promotional films (1914-1980), educational films or U.S. government productions, television commercials, theatrical trailers and ads, newsreels, amateur and home movies, and other items of cultural significance which are in the public domain because they were never registered for copyright or their copyrights have expired. The stated goal of the Prelinger Archives is to "collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere." By 2001 it had acquired over 48,000 completed films of varying lengths and over 30,000 cans of unedited film. In 2002, the Library of Congress acquired the contents of the Archives as of that date. As of spring 2005, the Archives holds about 4,000 films on video and over 30,000 cans of film acquired since the Library of Congress transaction. Approximately 2,000 public domain films are available for download and unrestricted reuse on the Internet at the Internet Archive. All the films in the archives are available for license for production use through Getty Images. What can you do with these videos? Well, according to their terms, just about anything you'd like... Rick Prelinger and The Internet Archive hereby offer these public domain films from Prelinger Archives to all for free downloading and reuse. You are warmly encouraged to download, use and reproduce these films in whole or in part, in any medium or market throughout the world. You are also warmly encouraged to share, exchange, redistribute, transfer and copy these films, and especially encouraged to do so for free. Any derivative works that you produce using these films are yours to perform, publish, reproduce, sell, or distribute in any way you wish without any limitations. Videos are available in a variety of formats, including MPEG2 and MPEG4. Simply download the clips you want, and import them into your preferred video editing program. The video above is the medium-bandwidth 256Kb MPEG4 version, which I then converted to a Flash 8 FLV file (medium quality, 400Kbps). At the Prelinger Archive, you'll find countless funny, interesting and unusual video clips and sound bytes that you can use. Check it out - it's a goldmine of a resource for the web video producer.
