[WVZ Alert] The most valuable lesson...
Here's your 'WebVideoZone.com Alert' from the desk of In this edition: ~ One of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned Greetings, my friend... My apologies, as this story is a little long. But if you're in business for yourself (or you'd like to be), then you should read this. It's important. A WVZ member recently inquired in our forum to see if any other members have had any experience with several high-profile internet marketing "gurus" and their pricey offerings. While I wasn't in a position to answer the question, it did get me thinking about the guru crowd, and the massive amounts of money they are consistently able to extract from the wallets of their loyal followers. Since I've been "online, full-time" since 1996, I've had the chance to meet quite a few gurus, both online and in person. And I do admit, I've donated my fair share to their cause. Despite all the hype, promises, and time and money invested, I have to tell you that the most valuable lesson I've learned in the past 12 years was presented to me in the form of a $9 ebook (or perhaps it was $17, since everyone knows that the price of ebooks must end in a "7" ; ) The lesson was one sentence long, and it was given to me by Allen Says, of Internet Marketing Warriors fame. He claims a mysterious and successful older gentleman shared this "secret" with him years ago. Allen, in turn, was kind enough to share this wisdom with me (along with the five million other people who bought his ebook). And here it is: "Create the product/service you'd want to use." Before I'd read that, for years I'd been developing sites and services with the sole intent of earning an income online. While there's nothing wrong with that, I've found that when you focus exclusively on making money, you end up feeling empty inside. At the end of the day, I'd ask myself: Invariably, the answer was always, "No." In 2003, the second of my two children was born. Kids really change the way you look at the world. I started thinking about how I would respond in a few years when they started asking me what I did for a living. I didn't really have an answer. As a result, I quit what I was doing, and spent a couple of years trying different things with a new approach. And that's when my new business mantra was presented to me. And a year later, The WebVideoZone was born. It's the result of focusing not on money, but on striving to create value, solve problems and help people. It's the type of product/service I would use if I were looking to take advantage of web video and didn't want to spend a lot of time/money trying to figure it all out My advice: Don't worry about the gurus. Most are just good at getting you to believe they know something you don't - which of course they'll be happy to share with you for a hefty fee. Some of the worst advice I ever received was from a top "guru."
When I was starting the WVZ, I was advised not to worry about
the Flash 8 FLV converter and web video hosting service I had
wanted to offer, saying it wasn't worth the considerable cost to develop. But based on feedback from WVZers, I'd say he was wrong: I did the opposite of what a guru suggested, keeping the above mantra in mind, and it has made all the difference in the world. - Build the web site you'd like to visit.
