Add video to your eBay auctions!
Add video to your eBay auctions!

How to add interactive video to your eBay auctions

If you sell on eBay, you want to get as many bidders interested in your items as possible. And the best way to do that, is by adding attention-grabbing, call-to-action interactive web videos to your auctions...

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then just imagine what a short video can convey. For times when a picture or two just won't do, there's nothing like a compelling little video to show off your merchandise and generate interest.

Here are the five simple steps to take when you're ready to add videos to your eBay auctions:

1. Create your video.

This isn't the time or place to get fancy. Show your product. Talk about what makes it special. When and where was it made? How is the condition? Be sure to use this opportunity to also point out any faults or defects. Potential bidders will appreciate this, and you'll more easily gain their trust as a result.

2. Create a Web Video Player for your eBay auction.

Upload your video to the web, and create a player configuration (or modify an existing one) for the video you would like to use in your eBay auction.

Your first configuration option is to specify where the video will be seen. In the 'Where to Display' section, select 'eBay' from the drop-down box:

Select the 'eBay' option from the drop-down box
Select the 'eBay' option from the drop-down box

The reason you need to specify for eBay is because the default Web Video Player output utilizes javascript for standard web sites. Since eBay does not permit javascript in their listings, this special eBay option makes it possible for you to add your video to their site.

When you select the eBay option, your generated player code is larger, but it accomplishes nearly the same thing - without the javascript.

Continue to customize your Web Video Player is usual, click 'Save Configuration,' and then copy the player's code to your clipboard (Keyboard Tip: CTRL+A = 'select all,' CTRL+C = 'copy,' CTRL+V = 'paste').

3. Login to eBay to create your auction listing.

Login to your eBay account as you normally do, and and click "Sell" to start creating your eBay auction listing:

Click on 'Sell' to start creating your eBay auction listing
Click on 'Sell' to start creating your eBay auction listing

Follow the steps for creating your auction, starting by locating the appropriate category, and then adding a title and optional subtitle and graphics.

You may want to skip adding images, as your video will give potential bidders a good idea of what you're offering; and, unlike the images, it's free to add your video.

4. Add video code to your eBay auction 'Description'

Continue to scroll down until you get to the 'Description' field. Click on the 'HTML' tab/link, and paste your video's code into the text box. First click within the box, and then press CTRL+V on your keyboard:

Click on the 'HTML' tab and paste your video code into the description box
Click on the 'HTML' tab and paste your video code into the description box

After you've pasted the code, check to see how it appears in your auction listing by pressing the 'Preview' link:

Click 'Preview' to see how your video will appear
Click 'Preview' to see how your video will appear

If you'd like to center or right/left align your Web Video Player within your listing, you can use HTML formatting tags such as 'div':

Once you're happy with the way it looks, then go ahead and...

5. Complete your auction listing

Continue through to the bottom of the page, providing the necessary information about the item you're selling on eBay. Hit the 'Save and Continue' and submit your auction as normal.

And that's it - you're done! Your video will now be live on eBay for the whole world to see when thinking about bidding on your auction.

A few other things you should know about adding video to eBay

  • Because the stats tracking feature of the Web Video Player requires javascript, you will not be able to track the number of times your video was viewed on eBay. You can turn the 'Stats Tracking' feature off in your player configuration. But remember, eBay offers free page stats, so be sure to utilize that feature to monitor how many people are viewing your auctions.
  • The real-time player updating feature will not work on eBay for the same reason as the stats tracking being disabled. If you update or make any changes to your player, you will also need to update your auction listing (if possible).
  • Be sure to activate your player's call-to-action features, such as the clickable logo and exit images. Add a "Click here to bid now" message during and after the video to encourage more people to place bids.
  • Utilize the player's custom branding features to promote your other eBay offerings, such as your eBay store. Choose 'Custom Text Link' and make the Player Branding URL your store's URL:
  • Utilize the player's branding features to get more bids
Utilize the player's branding features to get more bids

  • And don't forget to turn on your player's 'Tell a Friend' and 'Add to Site' viral buttons. These features will encourage people to share your auction with others.

One of the easiest ways to increase the amount of money your auctions earn on eBay is to simply increase the number of bids your auctions receive. This is done by Getting more people to your auctions... Getting them interested and excited in what your selling... Encouraging action and getting them to bid now.

And the Web Video Player™ is the tool that can help you do just that.
